Aysh
A homeowner in Bendigo types “how much does it cost to rewire a house” into Google at 9pm on a Sunday.
Two years ago, she’d have scrolled through ten blue links, clicked into three of them and eventually landed on someone’s quote form. Today, Google just answers her. An AI Overview appears at the top of the page, pulling together a summary from a handful of sites and she reads her answer without clicking on anything at all.
If your business isn’t one of the sources feeding that answer, you’ve lost the lead before she’s even seen your name.
This is the bit most trade businesses are getting wrong in 2026: they’re still optimising for the old game (get the blue link, get the click) while Google’s quietly playing a new one. AI Overviews and Featured Snippets look similar on the surface, both sit up top, both promise visibility without a full click through but they’re built differently, ranked differently and need to be approached differently. Treat them the same and you’ll end up optimised for neither.
Here’s the difference and how to actually win both.

The classic “position zero” box, a single paragraph, list, or table pulled directly from one page and shown at the top of results. Google is quoting one source, word for word and crediting it clearly.
Google’s AI reads across several sources, synthesises them into one original answer and stitches it together, sometimes citing three, four, five sites in the one response. You’re not the answer anymore; you’re an ingredient in the answer.
That distinction matters for how you write:
Featured Snippets | AI Overviews | |
Pulls from | One page | Multiple pages |
Format Google favours | Tight, extractable paragraph/list/table | Clear, well structured facts and definitions |
Your job | Be the single best, cleanest answer | Be one of the most citable, trustworthy answers |
Visibility signal | Position zero, one link | Often no visible link at all, visibility, not always a click |
Most tradie sites are still writing for the first column and ignoring the second entirely.

Trade searches are overwhelmingly question based and urgent: “why is my hot water system leaking,” “how often should aircon be serviced,” “do I need a licensed electrician for a switchboard upgrade.” These are exactly the queries Google now hands off to an AI Overview instead of a plain list of links.
If your site has already done the groundwork on technical SEO and E E A T signals, you’re closer than you think. AI Overviews lean hard on the same trust signals Google has always rewarded, clear authorship, accurate local detail, structured content, they’re just being read by a model now instead of a person scanning ten blue links.
This is also exactly the shift our AI for Tradies service is built around, not chasing rankings for their own sake, but making sure your business is the one ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity actually recommend when someone asks “who’s a good [trade] near me.”
This is the part most trade websites haven’t touched yet.

The good news is you’re not choosing between two separate content strategies. The foundations overlap almost entirely:
Get these right and you’re in the running for both the snippet box and the AI Overview citation, often on the same page, for the same query.
Winning a citation in an AI Overview doesn’t always come with a click. Sometimes the homeowner gets her answer and never visits your site at all.
That’s not a reason to ignore it, it’s a reason to treat visibility itself as the win. Being the name Google’s AI trusts enough to quote, repeatedly, across dozens of local queries, builds the kind of brand recognition that pays off the next time she does need to click, to book, to call, or to compare quotes. It’s the same logic behind why SEO alone is no longer the full picture, visibility and reputation now do work that used to belong to rankings alone.
You don’t need to rebuild your whole site. Start with your five highest traffic service pages:
That’s enough to start showing up in both boxes. From there, it’s about building out the topical depth and structured content across your site that keeps you there.
